Consciousness Raising in Feminist Pornography
CR- or consciousness raising is a core element of feminist politics, especially the work and the exchange in the group has a consciousness raising effect. But how can we encourage more discussion about pornography and research on the effects of feminist pornography in particular? What findings already exist and what characterizes this “alternative” pornography and its consumers? How can bodies be decolonized and also cultural stereotypes deconstructed?
After a short input by Prof. Mari Mikkola, our awarded filmmaker Eri Sarmet (BRA) and POPO Fan (CHN/D) will discuss their work and working methods.
Prof. Dr. Mari Mikkola is a Professor of Philosophy and Chair of Metaphysics at the University of Amsterdam. They wrote Pornography. A Philosophical Introduction (2019) and Beyond Speech: Pornography and Analytic Feminist Philosophy. (2017) and focuses on feminist topics.
A cooperation of the Institut für Kulturwissenschaft, Brigitta Kuster, junior professor for cultural film sciences with a focus on Gender, Humboldt-University of Berlin with PorYes – Feminist Porn Award Academy.

Prof. Mari Mikkola, University of Amsterdam. Their research and publications focus on feminist philosophy and pornography. They is also Co-founder of the Board of the Society for Women in Philosophy Germany. Some Publications: Pornography. A Philosophical Introduction (2019) and Beyond Speech: Pornography and Analytic Feminist Philosophy. (2017), they also contributed “Feminist Perspectives on Sex and Gender” in Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

Prof. Clarissa Smith, Northumbria University, researches on sexual media and representations. She is co-founder and co-editor of the Routledge journal Porn Studies and a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Gender Studies, Sexualities, Cine-Excess and Participations. Her interests include the representation of porn stars, the meaning of masochism in sexual stories, the regulation and censorship of pornography, the emergence and use of objectification, and more.

Professor of Feminist Studies at University of California, Fellow at the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research at Harvard University, and a Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Cultural Inquiry Berlin. specialized in race, sexuality, and feminist politics.
